Populism 101 was an Erasmus+ Youth Exchange that brought together 48 participants and youth leaders from Croatia, the Netherlands, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and Serbia in Orahovica, Croatia. Throughout the exchange, participants explored populism as both a political style and an ideological challenge, examining how it manifests across Europe and discussing the social, economic, and political factors that have contributed to its rise.

Using non-formal education methods, including interactive workshops, debates, simulations, group work, role-playing activities, and intercultural learning, participants developed a deeper understanding of democratic governance and the importance of protecting democratic values. They also exchanged experiences from their home countries, compared different political contexts, and reflected on the challenges modern democracies face.

Project Objectives

  • Strengthen understanding of democratic governance by exploring the principles of the rule of law, separation of powers, human rights, pluralism, accountability, transparency, and freedom of the press.

  • Develop the ability to recognize and critically analyze populist rhetoric, including anti-establishment narratives, charismatic leadership, and “people versus elites” messaging commonly found in political discourse and media.

  • Compare manifestations of populism across partner countries, enabling participants to understand both the similarities and differences between national political contexts and the various forms populism can take.

  • Examine the root causes behind the rise of populism, including social, economic, and cultural challenges, while encouraging participants to reflect on the shortcomings of liberal democratic systems that have contributed to growing public dissatisfaction.

  • Promote critical thinking and media literacy, equipping young people with the skills needed to identify misinformation, evaluate political messaging, and make informed civic decisions.

  • Encourage active citizenship and democratic participation, inspiring participants to become more engaged in their local communities and contribute to strengthening democratic institutions through dialogue, cooperation, and civic action.

Beyond the educational programme, the youth exchange fostered intercultural dialogue, international cooperation, and lasting friendships among participants. By the end of the project, participants had improved their critical thinking skills, broadened their understanding of contemporary political challenges, strengthened their commitment to democratic values, and developed practical ideas for promoting civic engagement and democratic participation in their local communities.
