Christianity and Human Rights

The youth exchange has gather around 50 participants from Croatia, Portugal, Armenia, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Romania from 28 March – 6 April 2024, travel days included. In this project young people have explore the origins and historical
development of human rights and its relationship with Christianity. The activities took place in
various locations in Virovitica.

The goal of the project was to explore the impact of social and theological teachings of different types
of Christianity on the development of human rights – its positive and negative aspects. On the project
 focused on the following fields:
– Slavery
– Women’s rights
– Sexuality and LGBTI rights
– Democracy and capitalism.
Modern human rights movement is often seen in opposition with “conservative” Christianity. However, in this project the participants have explored the origins of human rights and why in many cases it was very devout Christians that were spearheading these human rights movements. The focus of the project is intercultural and interreligious analysis between different types of Christianity – Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity, Lutheranism, Calvinism & Reformed Protestantism and Eastern Christianity. The partners were carefully selected to come from countries with cultural and historical traditions of different types of Christianity.
